Polite Language Used by Sales Clerks

In Japanese department stores and other retail settings, sales clerks typically use a very polite style of speech when speaking to customers. As a result, you may hear expressions that are more formal than the Japanese you normally use in everyday conversation. For example, in the dialogue, the sales clerks use ございます instead of あります and …でございます instead of ～です: A: ボールペン、ありますか。 → B: はい、ございます。こちらは 8,000円でございます。 You will also frequently hear special expressions such as いらっしゃいませ (“Welcome”), かしこまりました (“Certainly”), and おあずかりいたします (“I will take/receive [your payment]”). You do not need to use all of these expressions yourself, but it is useful to recognize them when shopping in Japan.

...になります

Another expression commonly heard from sales clerks is ...になります: こちらになります。 (Here is the one.) Traditionally, ...になります means “becomes...,” so some speakers and language commentators criticize its use when nothing is actually “becoming” or “changing.” For example, こちらでございます is sometimes considered more appropriate than こちらになります when a clerk is simply presenting an item. Nevertheless, this use of ...になります is widespread in contemporary customer-service language, and you are likely to hear it in stores, restaurants, hotels, and other service settings.
