Yamada and Suzuki are at a Japanese diner near the campus. Kimura arrives late and seems a little upset.

Ms. Kimura came in. She seems a little upset.

Translation

Waiter1: What would you like to order?
Yamada1: What should we get?
Suzuki1: I'll have the ramen.
Yamada2: I'll have the curry rice.
Waiter2: And what would you like to drink?
Suzuki2: Just water is fine.
Yamada3: I'll have a Coke.
Waiter3:

So, that's the ramen and the curry rice, and a Coke and water to drink, right?

Suzuki3: Oh, actually, I'll have a Coke, too.
Waiter4: Two Cokes, then. Certainly.
Ms. Kimura came in. She seems a little upset.
Yamada4: Oh, Kimura, you're late. What's wrong?
Kimura4: A strange robot keeps following me.
Suzuki5: What? A robot?
Kimura5: Look. It's still outside the diner.
Suzuki6: Oh, you're right. Whose robot is it?
Kimura6: I don't know.

Cultural Notes

1.

The sentence ぼくはカレーライスです does not mean “I’m curry rice.” Rather, this is the です abbreviation pattern we learned in Lesson 9. Here, Yamada is responding to Suzuki’s ぼくはラーメンにします (“I’ll have the ramen”) and omitting the part that is already understood from the context. Thus, ぼくはカレーライスです is equivalent to ぼくはカレーライスにします and means “I’ll have the curry rice.”
