マフラーとスカーフ
In Japanese, マフラー and スカーフ refer to different types of neckwear, even though both may be called a scarf in English. マフラー usually refers to a warm, relatively thick scarf worn around the neck in cold weather. It is commonly made of wool, knit fabric, or similar materials and is a typical winter accessory. Thus, マフラー is the natural word for a winter scarf given as a birthday or Christmas present. スカーフ, on the other hand, usually refers to a thin, lightweight piece of fabric, often silk or a similar material, worn around the neck or head mainly for fashion. It is not normally associated with keeping warm.
