In this lesson, you will learn basic vocabulary and grammar for talking about past events and activities. You will also learn how to ask questions such as “Where did you eat lunch?”

ぶんぽう (Grammar)

  1. Wh-word: なん、なに、なんじ、いつ、だれ、どこ、どんな、どちら、どれ、どうして
  2. Wh-word + particle/counter: だれが なにを、なんかい、etc.
  3. Polite Past Verbs: ...ました、...ませんでした
  4. Interjections: ええと、あれ？、あのう
  5. Timeから Timeまで、Locationから Locationまで: from time/location to time/location

  6. Polite Past Noun and な-Adjective Sentences: ...でした、...じゃありませんでした、...じゃなかったです

  7. Polite Past い-Adjective Sentences: ...かったです、...くありませんでした、...くなかったです

  8. Frequency of actions: いちにちに ...ど・かい
  9. Duration of actions: いちにちに ...時間
  10. Plain Non-Past Verbs: のむ、のまない
  11. Plain Non-Past Adjectives and Nouns: おいしい、すきだ、テストだ
  12. Stating a reason using から: because
  13. Giving explanations with ...んです: It's that...
  14. ...が (or けど) as a conversation opener

Useful Social Expressions

  1. あれ？: Huh?
  2. ええと… : Uhh... (Hesitation expression, "I'm thinking...")
  3. ねえ: Hey; Say; You know.
  4. あのう… : Umm... (Hesitation expression to get someone's attention, "Excuse me.")
  5. ちょっとしつもんですけど…: I have a question; Let me ask you something. (Conversation Opener)
  6. どうしたの？: What's wrong?
